Dog Seat Belt

When you own a dog you want to ensure that they get enough exercise, and where you live this might not be possible. You may need to transport them in your car to get them to the nearest dog walking place. If this is the case then you will need a dog seat belt, although many people think these are not essential they can stop accidents happening and ensure that your dog is safe when traveling.

Although it is not law for your dog to wear a seat belt it is advised, if you need to brake suddenly or turn sharply your dog can become a lethal missile. Even at very low speeds your dog will gain speed and can go from a 60 pound dog to an impact of 120 pounds. They could not only kill themselves but also injury or possibly kill other people in the car. If you do have an accident then the first one the scene would rather your dog was restrained as this can make their job far easier.

An injured dog will try to run away and if they are wearing a dog seat belt then they will be able to be treated much easier. Your dog may be confused, scared and injured if you have an accident they may become aggressive towards the people trying to help them. If they are wearing a seat belt then they can be muzzled and treated. Also if they can escape they may run into the road causing more accidents and injuries to themselves and other road users.  This is why it is advised for your dog to be wearing a seat belt as much as any other passenger should be.

Driving can be distracting enough and if your dog gets excited when in the car then it can be a nightmare. You need to be concentrating on the road ahead, and do not want to keep turning around to check what your dog is doing. Unrestrained dogs can jump on your lap, get under the pedals or block your vision; although they may think they are playing really they are being dangerous.  A lot of dogs love hanging their heads out of the car window, and if they get the chance they often jump out of the car. If they are wearing a seat belt then you can have the window open to allow air in the car, but know that your dog won't escape at the first opportunity.

Also when you stop the car leave the dog still restrained even if you need to pop somewhere for a short space of time. An excited dog can jump around and knock the parking brake or cause damage to your car. It is better simply to leave your dog in their seat belt until ready to take them out as this will avoid any accidents occurring. Also remember when putting your seat belt on your dog not to restrain them near an airbag as that can kill them if you do have an accident. A dog seat belt restraint not only protects your dog but also you and your passengers.
