Types of Dog Collars

If you are thinking about getting a dog or a puppy, chances are you are going to need a collar for your new pet. There are a variety of different kinds of dog collars to choose from and knowing what kind of collars are available and what they are used for, will help make it easier for you to decide which collar or collars will benefit your dog the most.

Standard Flat Buckle Collars

The standard flat buckle dog collars can be purchased in almost any store where pet supplies are sold. These collars usually have buckles and come in either leather or nylon. This basic collar is the best collar to use for every day use. This collar is the type of collar that you normally attach your dog’s proof of rabies vaccine and your name and address to in case he is lost.

When fitting this kind of collar to your dog’s neck it should be fitted high on the neck and there should be enough room to slide two fingers between the dog’s neck and the collar.

Martindale Collar

The Martindale collar also known as the Greyhound collars or the humane choke collar. These collars are used for training purposes. They consist of two loops one large and one small. The large loop fits around the dog’s neck and the smaller loop called a control loop fastens to the leash and tightens when the dog or the handler pulls on the leash.

More and more people who use the slip choke collars now prefer the Martindale collar as it does not hurt the dog’s trachea when the dog pulls on the leash and it also does not damage the neck fur.

Break Away Collar

The break away collar is designed to prevent choking if the dog gets caught up on a fence, tree limb or other obstacle. This collar looks a lot like a flat buckle collar but has a special mechanism that allows the dog to break free if too much pressure is applied or if the dog is caught.

Stud Collars

Stud collars happen to be leather collars fitted with dull points and in some cases metal studs. These collars were original designed to keep other animals from biting a dog’s neck in case of an attack. Today they are mainly used as fashion accessories for dogs.

Slide Choke Collars

Slide choke collars known as choke chains are collars that were designed to pinch the brachial nerve in the dog’s neck. It was simulated to provide the same type of pinch that a mother dog would give her pup when she nipped him to get him to behave. This collar was often used by professional dog trainers though more and more dog trainers are switching to the Martidale and other type of training collars due to the high potential of injury a dog can suffer from these collars.

Injuries include damage to the trachea if the chain is pulled too tight during training as well as the hazard of choking if the dog is wearing the collar and gets hung up on a fence or tree branch.

There are many other types of collars available for you to choose from but this should give you the idea of the kinds of collars that are available for your pet.
