Dog Collar Varieties Broken Down

When you are shopping for dog collars and leashes you want to make sure that you get the best product for your pooch.  There are hundreds of different types on the market, and choosing one can be somewhat difficult.  To make an educated decision you are going to need to think about the type of dog you have and what would suit their needs the best.  Additionally you need to understand the pros and cons of each type of dog collar.

Dog Harnesses are a several strapped harness that you secure around the chest of your furry friend.  This type of collar basically, crosses cross your dogs shoulders, runs down their sides, and around their middle.  A dog harness is generally used for smaller dogs because it suits their small frames.  Be aware that a harness is not necessarily a good choice for prolonged wear because it can cause some significant chafing or matted fur.  While harnesses are often purported to protect a dog from the dangers associated with pulling on a leash, but it can also encourage pulling if trained that way. There are No Pull Dog Harnesses that are designed to help keep your dog from puling.  These are constructed in such a way that when your dog pulls the leash it automatically pushes your dog back to where you want them.  These are generally used for larger dogs, but again they are not appropriate for prolonged use.

Some dog owners choose to use a Head Harness.  This is actually a leash that you attach at your dogs jaw.  A head harness is something that you would want to use for a dog that tends to significantly pull on its leash.  Additionally, it can be a very good tool to help you teach your dog how to heel properly.  Though it does not sound like it wearing a head harness is really rather comfortable for your dog to wear.  Even though it may look a bit like a muzzle your dog is free to bark, eat, and drink without obstruction.

Traditionally, dog owners tend to choose Nylon Collars as an option for their dog.  This type of collar is perfect for day to day wear for your dog.  You can find them with either buckle or clip closures, and it is really a matter of personal preference as to which you want to choose.  However, you want to be sure that you do not choose one that might be too tight on your pups neck.  Additionally, you do not really want to use this type of dog collar with a leash  because your dog could incur a neck injury.

For looks many dog owners choose to use Suede or leather dog collars and leashes.  These dog collars are really great to look at, but they have a few drawbacks.  Due to the materials that they are made of these collars can stretch out making it easy for your dog to slip free of their collar.  Additionally, some dogs may experience negative reactions to those collars especially when they get wet.
